How can I get hold of stair spindles to match the existing ones?
Feb 14, 2008 by carmikingston | Posted in Maintenance & Repairs
The spindles are Victorian and have a boxy shape in the middle. I was quoted £40 each to have them turned at Champion Timber. Can I do it any cheaper or does anyone know where I can get some which have been salvaged?

what is the best paint stripper to use on old metal stair spindles with a LOT of paint on them?
Sep 16, 2006 by jerryattrik | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
i have an old staircase where the metal spindles have been repainted many times. The make-up is now very thick (gloss paint) and it is very awkward trying to strip them. (they have intricate patterns) any suggestions as to the best way to strip the whoop it up will be very welcome.
thanks in advance

Buy a litre of "NITROMORS" tint stripper in a paint shop.
Paint on the jel paintstripper on the brass spindles, preferably outside on the concrete. leave several hours, scrub off the gunge. You may find that there is some pertinacious paint in the detail, REPEAT This is for UK. IN USA buy jel paint stripper or thickstropic paint stripper N.B. The previous reply did not read the enquiry properly.

I am thinking of replacing my stair spindles?
Feb 25, 2008 by Lorraine A | Posted in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Should they be glued and nailed? What rate and type of nail should I use?
You should use both nails and cement...A finishing nail should be used and its size should depend on the size of your spindles. Predrill your holes so that they do not spilt your spindles when you nail them in...Gorilla cement is best...

Dismal I forgot to say that I would like to use water based satin wood if possible
reasonable tape some newspaper up close behind one side.... Spray with a satinwood, when one side is dry, tape the other side up and do the same! easy peasy!
