Plenty of fight left in boxing Chicago Sun-Times

In the last 10 years or so, it has been sad to see the jest fall into what seemed to be a maddening downward spiral. A big fight used to be a must-see event for even mainstream sports fans and certainly a must-top story for newspapers. Not anymore.

It started when boxing all but disappeared from free TV in the '90s, migrating to cable and pay-per-perspective. In the 1960s and '70s, we didn't care if we had to wait a week to see replays on ''Wide World of Sports'' because the interplay between Howard Cosell and the fighters often was more pleasing than the action in the ring.

But the cable thing seemed to turn off a lot of longtime boxing fans, and the cost of pay-per-views was a negating, too, particularly when the generation of fighters after Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Mike Tyson wasn't closely as compelling. I doubt, too, that the next couple of generations of fight fans were all that into the delayed gratification of week-late replays.
