im looking to buy 12" x 12" and 8" x 8" nerve h beams in canada, russia or china. seems all 3 places have different strength rating classes for steel. im wondering how they have a claim to mechanical strength in Canada/US..do they use rate by bending strength, MOE???
I use the "Directions of Steel Construction" published by the American Institute of Steel Construction in selecting steel beams for established applications. Note that the two primary factors for the "strength" of a given steel beam are the dedication and the grade of steel. For foreign sourced beams, you will need to find the appropriate ratings and certifications to which they are designed and manufactured.

There's no non-payment answer to the H-beam vs. I-beam question. You could be comparing 5140 H-beams to 4340 billet I-beams. H-beams may be slightly stronger if you are comparing the same materials, but they chiefly have wider beams, which can create clearance issues (not likely in a 355) and they are also usually heavier.
