Observational studies have begun to show benefits compared with ritual, three-dimensional conformal radiation. One retrospective analysis found it resulted in a lower incidence of rectal bleeding, suggesting that it may be price-effective.
But this evidence is only accruing after the fact -- once the trend is unstoppable, Nguyen cautioned at the session.
"We have to ask ourselves, 'Did we do this backward?'" he said.
His catalogue analyzed treatment of 58,581 men 65 and older with nonmetastatic prostate cancer that was diagnosed from 2002 through 2007 and recorded in the native Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) tumor registry linked to the Medicare claims database.
Medicare reimbursement for power-modulated radiation therapy was $27,000 compared with $12,800 for traditional conformal radiotherapy at one large abstract center in 2006, Nguyen noted.
For minimally invasive prostate surgery, the only robot available is the Da Vinci system, which costs hospitals $1.4 million up front, plus $140,000 a year for alimony, he said.
Treasures that washed ashore this week; flotsam we wish the next tide carries away:
Merge dispatch now
According to a feasibility study, the towns of Wellfleet, Eastham and Orleans could spare a combined $1.3 million a year by merging their police departments.
The study also strongly suggests that two or three of the towns could liberate money by merging their police dispatch centers and assigning dispatch of fire and emergency medical services to Barnstable County.
While consolidating the administer departments may take two or three years, transferring the Wellfleet and Eastham fire and EMS dispatch to the Barnstable County Communications Center can be done now. (Orleans has already done it.) Once a borough approves the move, it takes around six months to complete the technical requirements.
After all, most of the other Cape towns shifted that duty to the regional get through center years ago.

My bond will not pay for this. They will pay for regular radiation treatments claiming they do not think Proton Beam is superior to regular external radiation treatments.
there is also microwave bombardment to the prostate also.
“We invite you to find out about proton cure, our Center, the opportunities we offer for treatment and our team.”
The RPTC in Munich is the first fully certified European proton shedding centre that provides a complete hospital setting for the treatment of cancer tumours.
This innovative therapeutic operation involves the use of high-energy proton beams to treat cancer. The special characteristic of these proton beams is that protons allow three-dimensional targeting of the lump by contrast with the X-rays used in conventional radiation therapy. This permits highly effective doses to be delivered to the excrescence while reducing the side effects of radiation by minimizing trauma to the surrounding healthy tissue.
Just as this valuable Proton Center opens and treats it’s first Indefatigable in March 2009 – The Wall Street “Health Journal” put’s out it’s article: Prostate Cancer: Weighing Options by Melinda Beck
Ignores the Proton due to rough research.
Anyone who writes about Prostate Cancer Treatment should know about Protons – Once again, I am personally over nine years and seven months upright Proton treatment and have NO side effects.
These are facts and grouping Protons with Radiation in general is a gross mistake. Go back to my site’s foot in the door paragraph and note the statement, “This permits highly effective doses to be delvered to the tumour while reducing the side effects of shedding by minimizing trauma to the surrounding healthy tissue.”
That’s a fact folks, I’ve been through it with over 8,000 other men at Loma Linda Proton Center alone and we are on top of the world.
Look at the evidence my web site alone www.prostateblog.com and then read the testimonies at www.protonbob.com.
For the WSJ, wake up and smell the roses!
