How do you remove paint from tin ceiling tiles?

Mitigate! I need ideas for removing paint from antique tin ceiling tiles. We are renovating a 1920's cottage, and have charmed the tiles down to strip the paint.

The first layer seems to be a latex paint and the second layer is lead-based. We craving to strip them down, prime and repaint them a copper color.

Well, the most excellently and least expensive and least time costly way to do it is as follows:

Use oven cleaner. Apply a thin layer of the oven cleaner to the tin tiles and use a slight feel embarrassed putty knife to remove peeling and loosened pieces. Apply a second layer of the oven cleaner using a resolute bristled brush to get the oven cleaner into the cracks and crevices. Apply as many layers as you need. You'll be gifted to just wipe away the residu with a damp rag. However, you should wait about (but no more!) than 2 hours for the oven cleaner to work appropriately. Don't wait longer so it doesn't damage your tin tiles.

Protect the surface of the floor with a magnanimous sheet of plastic, since oven cleaner can harm your floors. It's also important to protect your eyes with sheltering goggles and your hands with rubber gloves.

Also, though it isn't part of your question, when you prime your tin tiles, make sure you use an oil-based primer to elude having your tiles rust from water-based primer. You can then paint latex paint on top of the oil-based primer without a unmanageable.

This is how I did my tin tiles and those of 3 clients.

Enjoy your new tin tiles... ;-)

Linseed oil or turpentine. Fortunate your heart. I'm glad to know someone else loves thoses tiles as much as I do. It's going to be a very messy long-drawn-out job, but well worth it. They don't make them like that anymore!

Greasepaint thinner should do the job... But paint/varnish stripper will be easier...

I'd recommend using "nitromors" nearby here (or try your local hardware store):http://www.edirectory.co.uk/pf/880/mia/d/nitromors+paint+varnish+remover+500ml/pid/6353638

BE Vigilant, wear thick rubber gloves (builders gloves - not dish gloves), and clothes you don't mind ruining (you quite are anyway if you're decorating right?)

Apply nitromors generously to the area you want to clean with a paint sweep, make sure to AVOID CONTACT WITH SKIN... Leave for 5/10 minutes (Till draw has blistered and started to flake off). Wipe clean and rinse.

Does anyone know where I can find tin ceiling tiles for cheap?

I am remodeling a very old house of ill repute, it has and had some tin ceiling tiles in it, I would like to keep the look, the new tin tiles don't go well with old and the new tin tiles are too expensive to replace the whole ceiling.

I have seen brick up paper that you can apply to the ceiling at Home Depot , if you like can leave it white or paint it using either a copper or tin badge paint .

How do I strip an old tin ceiling that's peeling?

We have a large, original, metal (tin?) ceiling in our kitchen that was painted and is now a pretty bad mess of peeling paint. We sweep it periodically to lay in ruins off the chunks but I need a quicker way to get the old paint off. It can't be scraped due to the texture. What can I use without damaging the metal? Once that's done, what type of paint would I use so I don't end up with the same difficulty?

This may bluster crazy but I stripped off a 3000 sq ft ceiling with this method (contractor wanted $17,000) I used an electric weed wacker (yes, a weed wacker) Knocked off the surface and did not damage the tin at all. If you try this I STRONGLY recommend using a face shield and wearing long sleeve clothing as the persuadable from the line will sting you when it breaks off. Also wear a dust mask. The beauty of this is that you are left with a DRY dust or very small chips of pint to make a revelation up. You will be amazed at how well this works. I am getting ready to paint using an oil based primer. Best of luck.

How to make tin looking ceiling tile?

I have the aluminum (flashing)sheets and a trivet with the aim which I would like - now - how do I create the same look with these materials as a tin ceiling? I have attempted a hammer - does not work well - any suggestions?

You could enlarge the shape out of wood, and then lay the metal over the shape, and hammer away.

I love tin ceilings – but can I add one to my house?
I love tin ceilings – but can I add one to my house? The doubt: I love tin ceilings, but are they too suggestive of Paris or New Orleans watering holes? If not, could you install one in any room? The answer: A chic new bistro in Toronto has installed a tin ceiling and, yes, it feels like Paris there.
