It depends on whether or not you have livebearing or egg laying fish. In livebearing fish, such as Guppies, here is an dissection.
The anal fin has changed into a copulative organ, known as the gonopodium. If you look at any pictures of male guppies, you will see a knee-breeches, stick like fin at the base of their body. This is the gonopodium. When mating, the male inserts the gonopodium into the female and transfers a sperm fortune that dissolves in the ovarian tube. Some sperm fertilize the eggs, while the remaing sperm are store in the folds of the walls in the ovarian tubes. This ensures that in the wake eggs can be fertilized without the prescence of the male. Here's a site that shows pics of Guppies: http://www.guppywest.com/gallery.htm

are my fish guaranteed to have babies?
Feb 07, 9591 by delicioso899 | Posted in Fish
today i bought four glassfish. i'm hoping that at least one will have babies..i'm not definite if they're male or female so maybe it's not even possible, lol. i don't know much about fish reproduction (haha)..but is it likely that they are going to have little baby fish? or no?
No fish is guaranteed to have fry. Unless peradventure you have a male and female convict that like each other. And its even harder to tell since you don't know what gender they are. Wait it out. If you want cosset fish get convicts.
